Tara is the one name for a number of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who are revered and turned to for the development of similar qualities. All are feminine in aspect, and in general she (the many Taras) are viewed as a feminine principle known as the Mother of Mercy and Compassion. She is often viewed in this light as the source for the female aspects of the universe, giving birth to warmth, compassion, and relieving bad karma while nurturing creation with the sympathy of a mother. Along with these more mature qualities, she is also often regarded as a youthfully playful figure of divinity and as such is portrayed most often as a 16 year old, girlish woman. Within Tantric practice Tara is a focus for yoga, as well as a an aspect of one's mind to awaken. Here she is portrayed in a traditional manner; a youthful young woman standing while performing mudras, with flowery pants billowing on her lower body while her upper body is concealed by beads and flowers. Sculpted of brass, the statue captures here serenity and youthful vigor, lending the impression of a divine figure that may well smile playfully while offering compassion and mercy. Standing 11" tall and 4" wide, the statue is perfect for your altar or where ever else in your home or sacred space that you might wish to seek the influence of Tara.
